Armenia in the global world: problems of adequacy

seminar (medium) On June 1 of the current year in “Noravank” Foundation was held a round table discussion on the subject “Armenia in the global world: problems of equivalence.” According to the Foundation’s Director Gagik Harutyunyan, the thesis of Arnold Toynby’s that successful functions of civilizations suppose adequate responses to the challenges issued, which are actual and well-grounded even in case of Armenia.

Passing a most difficult period of its history within these 20 years the Armenian society has begun responding adequately to the processes happening in the world. There is a certain positive advance in the consciousness of Armenian society, the Armenian political elite also develops accordingly. All these have come to reveal that a certain society is being formed in Armenia which can appreciate its own potential and place in the global world.

The speaker pointed out that as the quantitative expression of the above mentioned observations may be considered to be a few rating publications, particularly the data of Economic Freedom Index released with the joint efforts of Foreign Policy and Thomson Dialogue Foundations.

According to the information provided by Failed States Index for 2006 the ratings of Armenia are more favorable than the ones of other countries of the region as Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia. Although it is considered that Ukraine and Georgia are the most democratic countries among the SIC states, however, Armenia’s showings don’t yield to them.

According to Failed States Index for 2006, Armenia takes the 32nd place for its showing of economic freedom. Armenia also has high rating of “investment freedom,” which is conditioned not only by the activity of the Armenian Diaspora, but also by the development of information technologies.

The speaker is sure that as for Armenia’s condition, in the rating publications is pointed out that the Armenia society aspires for taking its proper place in the international society. Being involved in global developments and in the process of rooting democracy, Armenia mainly preserves its independence. Armenia has all characteristic traits of being a civilization unite.
