INTEGRATION, ENERGY AND REGIONAL GEOPOLITICS

For the past decades Armenia and the whole region were torn apart between two large integration projects: the Western and Eurasian. The article presents the results of a survey on attitudes of Armenian citizens towards these integration processes, as well as the possible influence of the complementary policies on them. The prospects of these processes impacting the energy and national security of the country are also discussed.

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES: RISK MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY PROBLEMS

The article discusses possible threats to Armenia and its allies, which are now facing a wide range of hostile acts aimed at undermining critical economic assets and institutional systems (infrastructures), with the objective to harm opportunities of ensuring the security of the state. Areas of work are proposed to develop and create a strategy and resulting opportunities that are necessary to encounter such threats.

CYBERATTACKS ON CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES AS THREATS TO NATIONAL SECURITY

Cyberattacks currently transformed from hypothetical threats to the category of the real dangers for the critical infrastructures of countries, becoming serious risks at the national security level. In the meanwhile, none of the actions to prevent and counter cyberattacks have been implemented in Armenia at the national or government level. The legislation by and large does not reflect the modern realities of the IT sector. Absence of a clear strategy currently results in absence of standards and serious vulnerability of our national security.

THE PATH TO THE FUTURE AND THE CIVILIZATIONAL TRAPS

Currently we observe a real War of the Worlds, though not with Martians, but between the countries with strong and weak economies. The history had various versions of interaction between strong and weak countries, including for example such phenomenon as the emergence of the Cargo Cult. However, what appears to be the most optimal scenario, is not the one with blind following of the victor country model, but the creation of own realistic strategies of development. The adaptive system of education plays an important role in this.

THREATS TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY OF ARMENIA: THE TRENDS FOR 2007-2017

The article examines the trend of changes in external threats to Armenia's national security over the last 10 years. Situation analysis is based on the threats, which are given in the National Security Strategy adopted in 2007. As a whole, an attempt is made to show how the external environment of the country's national security has changed and what challenges the country faces.

THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA AND SOCIAL NETWORKS IN SHAPING THE INTERNATIONAL DISCOURSE ON PROTESTS IN IRAN

The article attempts to conceptualize the events that occurred in Iran from December 28, 2017 to January 3, 2018. In particular, the role of mass and social media in organizing, provoking and covering the mass riots in the Iranian cities during the mentioned period is analyzed. The objectives of the internal and external forces are discussed in the context of the attempts to kick off “velvet revolution” mechanisms in Iran. The article also analyzes and uncovers the role of mass and social media in the intentionally targeted shaping of wrong international discourse on the protests in Iran. The intermediate results of the mentioned events are summarized and conclusions are offered.

THE ROLE OF TURKEY IN THE “ARAB SPRING”

It is evident that Turkey is now a significant regional player, which is aiming to conduct independent political activities. Consistent politics of Ankara in Syria, Iraq and generally the structures of Turkish foreign policy newly shaped by influential leaders Erdogan and Chavushoglu, opened a new door for Turkish political activity. This political strategy made the Turkish government revise their foreign policy by concentrating attention to Middle East, and Asia as a whole, considering them as priorities. The military operation “Olive Branch” recently started in Syria can be studied in the continuation of “Euphrates Shield”.

THE UNITED STATES FOREIGN POLICY TOWARD THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION: CHALLENGES ON THE AGENDA

There has been a gradual shift of the world economic development center to the Asia -Pacific region in recent decades. Undoubtedly, it has increased the importance of this region for the global political and economic actors. In this article, the author examines the main trends of US foreign policy toward the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the main problems and prospects that are on the agenda in the interaction of the United States with the countries of the "Pacific Ring".

THE DEATH OF GENERAL NORIEGA AND PANAMA’S BALANCE BETWEEN THE USA AND CHINA

The article discusses the significance of General Noriega’s death in the complicated geopolitical context of Panama’s development. It is no secret that in Latin America revolutions are often related to drug dealing. That was the case with Panama, too. The authorities in Venezuela and leftist guerillas of Columbia both rely on drug dealing. Both of these neighboring countries always influenced Panama. In addition, the National Guard had and continues to have an important impact. That is why Noriega, who controlled these forces, took the path of disobeying the US directives, which led to his death. Today Panama is at another geopolitical crossroad, the peculiarities of which are presented in the article.

THE CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF A SOCIAL STATE AND THEIR REFLECTION IN THE ARMENIAN CONSTITUTION

The article analyzes the conceptual foundations of a social state and their reflection in the constitution of the Republic of Armenia. A special attention is paid to the specifics of the constitutional and legal regulation of the social state institute in Armenia. The main articles of the Armenian constitution pertaining to the social matters are analyzed.
