The confiscation of churches and church property, intimidation of the faithful, repressions of the clergy were followed by the shutdown of the Diocese. The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, which had used every possible mean to preserve the existence of the Artsakh Diocese for more than a decade, was no longer able to confront the wayward acts of Azerbaijan’s authorities unleashed and fully supported by USSR central authorities.
