THE GROWTH OF EXTREMISM AND THE FACTOR OF “INTELLECTUAL PARITY”

Gagik Harutyunyan

Resume

The growth of extremism observed currently is caused not only by painful process of multipolar world formation and protest movement rise, but also by activities of American think tanks that generate “smart technologies.” Effective counteraction to such technologies by other countries is possible only when they achieve an “intellectual parity” in the area of relevant humanitarian technologies.

RELIGION IN THE OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT OF IRREGULAR WARS

Hrachya Arzumanyan

Resume

The article aims at reconceptualization of the role of religion in operational environment of irregular military operations and asymmetric warfare, in particular, the counter-insurgency doctrine of the USA. The doctrine qualitatively devaluates the function and role of religion and does not distinguish the spiritual insurgency as qualitatively distinct from the secular/political form. This approach is caused by separation of religious and political domains in the West. The analysis of historical and current conflicts shows that spiritual insurgency movements are not secular/political constructs, but rather, they are new violent religious movements that use or try to use violence for achieving some sacred goals or end-state. The Western counter-insurgency doctrines appear to underestimate the role of religion, which leads to problems in recognizing the range and classification of religious conflicts in doctrinal terms.

INFORMATION OPERATIONS: HISTORY AND MODERNITY

Gagik Terterov

Resume

The article reviews the evolution of information realities and their current situation. The information wars and operations, their significance in modern politics and other areas have become subjects for extensive discussions. However, the essence of such wars is often perceived and interpreted in somewhat simplified manner, which in turn makes it difficult to resolve extremely complicated problems of information security. Meanwhile, a new kind of information warfare is emerging, which requires comprehensive and thorough study.

MASS MEDIA IN THE COMMUNICATION STRATEGY OF TERRORISM

Svetlana Anufrienko

Resume

The article explains the reasons why terrorists seek getting coverage by mass media. The historical retrospective of the factors that increase terrorists' interest in information support expounded. The author analyzes the traits of terrorism and its transformation in the end of the 20th century and arrives at the conclusion that the boundary between classical and modern terrorism lies at a point between 1970s and 1980s. It was the time when media industry started to flourish and enabled terrorists to achieve immense social outreach, to exert pressure over the government structures through manipulation by public opinion. A conclusion is made that modern terrorism attributes high priority to the role of mass media in achieving its goals.

THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE: AN IMPERATIVE FOR POLITICAL RECONCEPTUALIZATION A CENTURY AFTER THE MEDZ YEGHERN

Aleksandr Manasyan

Resume

Yeghern - the Genocide of Armenians in their homeland - only recently became a subject for open political discussion, after decades of silence. Numerous facts, concepts and statements concerning Yeghern (The Armenian Genocide) await new interpretation. On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide we draw the attention of the world community to some of these facts. The principal conclusion of this analysis stems from the concept according to which the widely held and publicized formula of “The Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923” does not fully reflect the factual and political content of this crime against humanity. In particular, the massacres of the Armenians in Transcaucasia in 1918 and 1920 escaped the corpus delicti of the crime of genocide. The international political consequences of Yeghern as a crime against humanity have not been fully assessed. In the same manner the consequences of the superpowers' irresponsibility toward the phenomenon of Yeghern has not been comprehended yet in all respects. This is the main reason why new genocidal states have been established and this kind of criminal behavior paves its way to be legalized.

Igor Bagiryan

DEVELOPMENT OF MILITARY-TECHNICAL COOPERATION BETWEEN RUSSIA AND LATIN AMERICA

Georgi Kolarov

Resume

The article analyzes visits of Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and Sergey Shoygu, Russian Minister of Defense, to the countries of Caribbean Sea coast. Presidents of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Brazil remain among the most important allies of Russia in the region and the author concludes that it might be possible to establish or re-establish Russian military presence in these countries. The reasons are explained why other Latin American countries with left centrist and left-wing radical governments are not suitable for Russian Navy bases or logistic and technical support centers for navy, as they are related to various degrees of risk and potential changes in future.
