Like the rest of the world Azerbaijan is also under the influence of explosive growth of the influence of the social media. More than a half of the population is Internet users there (Picture 1).

Facebook is social network number one there; according to the figures for January 10, 2013, there are 984 thousand 700 active users (Picture 2).

The user age distribution and male/female ratio are also notable. For example the males on Facebook in Azerbaijan constitute 2/3 of the whole number of the users, which may be an indicator of the impediments in the society. It should also be taken into consideration that there are some demographic deviations among the younger generation1. And the number of people of the age of 18-24 makes up exactly half of the total number of users (Picture 3). By comparison the male/female user ration in Armenia is equal (Picture 4).

As for other social networks here, just like in other CIS countries, Russian Odnoklassniki.ru network is widespread (the number of its active users is 600 thousand people according to the figures for 2013). Let’s mention that growth is still continuing (Picture 5).

The traffic from Azerbaijan to Youtube in the second half of the last year doubled (Picture 6).

It should be mentioned that the social networks consider some users from the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic as visitors from Azerbaijan. This influences, though not considerably, the statistics.
